“Supporting food security through international grain and seed trade and investment” was the theme of an IGTC side event at the first ever International Plant Health Conference (IPHC) today, 21 September.  Vice President Iliana Axiotiades represented IGTC on the panel before an international audience to discuss global food security, and how it may be supported by sound practices by plant health authorities.  Levering a global rules-based trading system for the responsive, reliable and sustainable supply of grains, oilseeds, pulses and other agri-bulks was a focus for Iliana.

With IGTC leading the way, the side event was co-organized with World Trade Organization's Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF), International Grains Council (IGC) and International Seed Federation (ISF). Iliana and fellow panellists Melvin Spreij (STDF), Jack Metzelaar (ISF), Arnaud Petit (IGC) led a thoughtful session that was an important opportunity to share information on commercial actions and innovations that support accomplishments toward world food security and economic well-being goals as defined by the United Nations. In addition, common interests were highlighted among international actors that include farmers, producers, exporters, importers, governments, and consumers.  IGTCs Electronic Trading Documentation Working Group Co-Chair and representative to the IPPC ePhyto Solution Industry Advisory Group Shawna Enz Cross also attended the Conference and is supporting much of IGTC related success.

Our gratitude is extended to panel moderator Professor Nicola Spence CBE.  Congratulations to to the UK the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and professor Spence for a very successful event (link here) so far.
